Objectives 1. Improve water quality by targeting and decreasing polluting agents in discharge and runoff water. The chemical pollutants Diazanon and Pyriferos were listed on the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board's 1998 303(d) for Five Mile Creek. 2. Increase tidal water from 14-Mile Slough through the existing weir and reduce the quantity of vegetation left in the creek to decompose and rob the water of vital oxygen. Delta Keepers figures for dissolved oxygen in Five Mile Creek after the November 7th, 2002 rainfall which resulted in storm water flow into the creek after 170 days of no rainfall are as follows (in mg per liter of water). Note, all the figures that are below 3.0 are lethal to fish.
3. Address the problem of siltation created by discharges and runoff. Protect and improve the fragile creek banks. 4. Remove Water Hyacinth. This project, funded by the San Joaquin County Flood Control Agency, is expected to be completed December 19, 2002 unless there is significant rainfall before then. 5. Remove aquatic weeds, both floating and rooted, which reduces the food supply for wildlife, disrupts their reproductive cycles and affects water quality. 6. Clear out stream bed debris and decaying vegetation on a regular basis and educate property owners, users and governmental agencies on the value of protecting this unique environment. 7. Increase public awareness of this unique asset for residents and non-residents through educating the public about the variety of fish, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and diverse avian populations that are resident or seasonal migrants through the creek corridor available to the public at Swenson Park and Golf Course. 8. Develop
an on-going organization to assist in establishing a stewardship to obtain
these objectives. |
